Debka Oud #1 Dance by Ben Tzion Tiram Music by S. Shai Notes by Phillip M. Feldman June 23, 1988 Revised 9 Nov, 2014 in consultation with Michal Lynch This is a moderately-fast 3-part line or circle dance. (Another dance has been choreographed to this music; the newer dance is by Moshe Eskayo). The difficulty level is 3 on a scale of 1 to 5. Note: A variant of this dance uses different steps in part 3. I've inclued both the canonical and variant choreography. Prior to the Nov. 2014 update, these notes included only the variant steps because I believed them to be the canonical ones. Part 1: Face LOD (CCW around the circle) with hands joined at waist level. 1-2: Debka step: Touch with right heel in front and step forward onto R. 3-4: Touch with left heel in front and hold. 5-8: Back Yemenite left: Step backward with L, close R to L, step forward with L, and pause for 1 count. 9-15: Repeat 1-7. 16: Pivot 90 degrees to the left on L (to face center) and stamp R without weight. Part 2: Start facing center with hands joined at waist level. 1-2: Take a large step to the right, bending right knee slightly, and pause for 1 count. 3-4: Brush L from left to right and leap to the right onto L. 5-6: Facing LOD again, run forward two steps with R-L, pivoting on L to face center. 7-8: Facing center, stamp in place twice with R (no weight). 9-16: Repeat 1-9. Part 3: Face center and link arms in shoulder hold. Canonical choreography: 1-2: Step to the right with R and hold for 1 count. 3-4: Crossing L behind R, step L and hold for 1 count. 5-6: Step R, step L, walking forward towards 'center' 7-8: Quick Yemenite right: Step to the right with R, lean to the left, cross R in front of L; brush left 9-10: Step back L, brushing R forward into a knee lift, lift upper body. 11-12: Step back R, brushing L forward into a knee lift. lift upper body. 13-14: Two steps back with L-R 15-16: Step L in place, as bring body up straight, and hold. 17-32: Repeat 1-16. Variant choreography: 1-2: Step to the right with R and hold for 1 count. 3-4: Crossing L behind R, touch twice with L. 5-6: Quick Yemenite left: Step to the left with L, lean to the right, cross L in front of R, and pause for 1/2 count. 7-8: Quick Yemenite right: Step to the right with R, lean to the left, cross R in front of L, and pause for 1/2 count. 9-10: Hop twice on R (or hop and hold), brushing L forward into a knee lift. 11-12: Step backward onto L (a small step) and hop, brushing R forward into a knee lift. 13-14: Two steps in place with R-L. 15-16: Stamp R without weight and pause. 17-32: Repeat 1-16.
